[Via Related Group/Carlos Rosso]On Friday the Related Group threw a grand opening party for Icon Bay Park, the first new park to be built in Edgewater in a really, really long time and the only neighborhood park between Margaret Pace Park and those little scraps of green space leftover between the Julia Tuttle Causeway ramps, a.k.a. Martell Park and Stearns Park. Created through a deal negotiated with the City of Miami, the park is behind and partially underneath Related's Icon Bay condo tower, which is almost finished and was open for preview tours.
Designed by ArquitectonicaGEO, the waterfront park packs a lot into a relatively modest size, with art installations by YoungArts Foundation students, a dog park, a bay walk (that unfortunately doesn't connect to anything yet) lawns, and playful landscaping.
The park has the potential to be a real, and necessary neighborhood center. Visually the greensward connects seamlessly with the building's amenity deck and pool. However, the barrier of 'public' (who the park is ostensibly there to serve) and 'residents only' (who will pay for its maintenance) is as strict as ever. It is figuratively and literally Icon Bay's back yard.
