The Gilmore Estate is a converted house boat sitting on five acres in Islamorada with 300 feet of beachfront.
Listed now for $4.25 million, it experienced several price reductions after its original ask of $5.95 million back in March of last year. The 60-foot house boat was built in 1948, encompassing one stateroom, two bathrooms, a kitchen, salon, and top deck with a quad-bunk stateroom.
How the houseboat's presence came to be is rather fascinating, per the listing:
The Houseboat was originally docked next door at the Cheeca Lodge in the 1960's when Hurricane Donna broke her away from her mooring and left her high and dry on US 1. The Houseboat was found and then rolled on telephone poles back into the place where it sits, permanently "anchored" today commanding the perfect spot on the beach! The Houseboat was custom built for Baron Conrad Hilton, the hotelier. Rich in history, this estate has entertained many dignitaries including President Harry Truman and President George Bush Sr. President Harry Truman composed much of the Truman Letters from pen and pad while on the boat.
